How to have a great year at uni!

Updated: Oct 5, 2021

Now were coming up to the middle of September, people are moving away to start university, finally some freedom!

But it can often be very daunting living away from home and having to become more independent, particularly if it is your first year. Here are some tips to help you have a great year at uni!

1. Bring something to make your room feel more homely- this might be fairy lights, some blankets, photos of friends and family, or a stuffed toy. This makes your room a nice place to come back to and might make you feel less home sick.

2. Learn how to cook a few staples and make sure you have healthy and balanced diet. For example, pasta, an omelette, or noodles with plenty of vegetables. Google some more simple recipes and challenge yourself to try them. Now you can look after yourself and eat great food!

3. It’s also important to manage your money so that you’re not spending all your student loan at once - some things to consider are: travel expenses, course supplies, weekly shop, and most important saving some of your money for enjoying yourself. Some ways to do this can be through your banking app or just by keeping track on Excel spreadsheet.

4. Get a university planner to stay organised - this is really useful to keep track of your lectures, reading, shopping list and any other events going on.

5. Finally enjoy your year as much as possible. Although the actual studying of your chosen course is important, going out and trying new things is also a key part of university life. Make new friends, go to the freshers fair, explore the area you’re living in and try joining societies (maybe there is a Rotaract club at your university?) to find people with similar interests to you.

We hope this helps you settle into your university year and we wish you all the best on your new adventure. Good luck!
