COP26: What does it mean?

COP26, otherwise known as the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, is taking place from Sunday 31st October until Friday 12th November. Climate change is happening due to the increase in Earth’s greenhouse gases.

What is the greenhouse effect?

The greenhouse effect is where gases such as carbon dioxide and methane trap heat into the atmosphere and increase Earth’s temperature. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report that human-released gases have caused the majority of the increase in temperature.

What does climate change mean for us?

Global warming is having a negative impact on Earth, and subsequently impacting our lives. Consequences of global warming include:

  • Rising sea levels

  • Extreme weather events such as heatwaves, wildfires and floods

  • Rapidly declining wildlife population

How will COP26 help with climate change?

At COP26, leaders from across the globe will gather to discuss actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The leaders will put together actions that are required to significantly reduce emissions in order to ensure no further global temperature increase.

What steps can you take now in order to help with climate change?

  • Avoid disposable plastics such as coffee cups, cutlery and bags

  • Try a plant-based diet, or reduce the amount of meat and animal products that you consume

  • Reduce your use of energy e.g., wash your clothes on a cooler setting, turn off lights and invest in energy-efficient appliances.

  • Walk or cycle as much as possible instead of driving
